Rare, quite original, and a true head-turner, this 1969 Cord Royale is something special
This car will always have a story to tell just by its unique appearance, and so it will be your favorite attention-grabbing big block cruiser even when you don’t feel like saying anything at all.
Those who really know Cords, know this is not exactly a replica. Much like Avanti, once the main company closed down, true enthusiasts kept an iconic design alive under the official name. So when Sports Automobile Manufacturing Company (Samco) was in charge, the 810/812 line had evolved into cars like this Royale. The Cord you’re looking at today is also a true classic that has crossed the half-century mark. There is no concern for body rust thanks to fiberglass, the weather-stripping feels newer, and the overall presentation is quite complete. Plus, the yellow paint has the right amount of gloss to show off those curvy fenders. But more than just the fundamentals, this one looks fantastic for having all the right flair. Smoothie wheels, whitewalls, and faux exhaust header pipes – it’s all part of the classic style. And everyone instantly knows what you’re driving thanks to the iconic coffin nose.
Beneath the black convertible top is a distinctive buckskin tan interior. It has a well-done classic pattern on the front seats, door panels, and wrapping around the rear bench. These were rare crafted luxury machines, so the wood on the steering wheel matches the lumber on the dash, and console. There’s a large Stewart Warner speedometer and tach, and just below it in the center is an AM/FM/cassette radio. You’ve even got provisions for power windows and air conditioning (they may need some serving to perform ideally again.)
Hidden in the engine bay is some serious Mopar muscle. These larger Royale models came with a Magnum 440 motor, and this one a newer Holley four-barrel carburetor on top. It’s an easy operation when combined with the power steering, power brakes, and a three-speed 727 Torque-flight automatic transmission. But don’t let the luxury demeanor fool you. Anytime you want to experience Mopar muscle, the glasspack-style dual exhaust will give you a nice throaty rumble when you put your foot into this Cord.
